My philosophy is simple. Technology should help, not hinder. It should increase our productivity (although it's up to the individual to maintain their focus). It should help us accomplish things that would be impractical otherwise. |

Modest Technologies is a small business; as small as it can be (a company of one). This means that I'm careful and honest about what I'm capable of and not capable of. There are many things I know a lot about but few I'd consider myself to be an expert in. Experts are available. They are in the phone book. Lots of them. We all need them and they are worth what we pay when we use their full set of skills. I believe there's an 80/20 rule here. Of the technology-related tasks (and many other business tasks that require competence and attention to detail), about 80% of these tasks can be accomplished without a certified/degreed/credentialed expert. The remaining 20% justify and should be done with at least the assistance of an expert. I work in the first 80%. |
| • | Computer hardware maintenance, repair, and upgrades. |
| • | Computer software maintenance and upgrades (with extra care and potential use of experts with primary accounting systems, servers, etc). |
| • | Phone system troubleshooting (just the basics, more like the first 40% in this area). |
| • | Shipping systems (UPS, USPS, carrier-provided software and some vendor software). |
| • | Data Mining. Do you know where your customers are? Have you studied their demographics? Their average and median order sizes? New customer purchases versus repeat customer purchases? The list is endless but often smaller organizations don't have a solid grasp on this and aren't as effective in their marketing plans as they could be. Are you able to track the effectiveness of your marketing efforts? |

Here's the key; my primary motivation. It's not about the computer. It's about you. It's about the capability and success of your organization. I'm not a technician. I can work with and repair the technology but that's not what I enjoy. I enjoy finding ways to make your (our) organization better using technology; help us accomplish tasks more quickly with fewer opportunities for error; help our customers have a better experience; help our organization thrive. If you have grand plans and aggressive goals, you don't need me. If you can justify the expense, hire experts. But be careful, you're putting your future in their hands. Know when experts are called for and when they aren't and use them wisely. If your goals are modest and the tasks require more care and diligence than brute force, give me a call. If you need someone patient and deliberate who knows (or will find out) what to do, will communicate well and proceed with caution, all while keeping achievement of your goals as their primary purpose, give me a call. I'll keep the project on target, on budget, and right-sized. I will find and implement the most modest, seamless, and cost-effective solution. I will make sure the benefits outweigh the costs. |
